6 Jan 1853 Susana Evans b 14 Oct 1835 dau of Henry Evans a friend and neighbor. They are buried in the Henry Evans Cemetery five miles south of Newton. John and Susana homesteaded near Garlandsville, Miss. the land being given to them by both fathers in Jasper County, Miss. When the War between the states came John enlisted with the Garlandsville Rifles and Susana stayed at home and ran the farm as best she could with the help of some faithful negroes and relatives. Things were not easy as a demented Negro girl set fire to the home and was completed destroyed. Some old men and young boys rebuilt the home for her which was made of native pine logs which stood until 1925.
When General Grierson raided that section of the county, Susana sent all the livestock meat and other food into the swamp which could be buried except one mule which refused to be caught so the Yankees got him.
John's life in the army was very colorful and he enjoyed telling stories about it. He taught the soldiers how to cure the itch by applying lye soap from a gourd and then jump into a stream, one officer failed to jump into the stream and was uncomfortable for several days. When his brother Julius took a dangerous risk was killed on the battleflield, was buried by his brother John on the battlefield.
John was a tenderhearted man even though he was gruff and rugged.. He was tall of statue and very broad of shoulder. After the war John returned home and heart break continued to plague him as two small sons died with congestive chills in two days time. A few years later Susana became an invalid and spent the rest of her days in a wheel chair.
John did many things with his hands and he liked to read especially the Bible. He was not a doctor but did much to help the sick and he had a host of friends who visited him often. He provided well for his family and there was always a bounteous food supply. | Chapman, John Evans (I93)
